Derived from the Latin word “Mauretania,” meaning “west,” the nation’s name reflects its connection to North Africa, known as the Maghreb in Arabic. The Romans referred to the Berbers as Maures.
In 1860, the French gained control with assistance from the Maur church. This led to the destruction of Fouta Toro, Walo Walo, and Arab-Berber emirates like Trarza, Brakna, Taganet, and Adrar, as Mauritania became a state. The nation’s two main ethnic groups are Black Africans (Soninke, Bambara, Fulani) and Arab-Berbers (Maurs).
Regrettably, white Maurs consider black Africans (Haratin) as slaves. However, both black and white Maurs are part of the Maur identity. In contrast, black Arabs identifying as black Maurs embrace their African heritage. Sunni Islam unifies the people.
