COVID-19 Update: Ghana Entry Requirements at Kotoka International Airport
The Ghanaian government reopened Kotoka International Airport to international travel as of 1st September following five months of closure. The government is now confident that the coronavirus is under control and that it is safe to reopen Ghana’s borders. Incoming passengers will be required to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test from an accredited laboratory in the country of origin, in addition to a valid passport with VISA (for non-Ghanaians), proof of international vaccination against Yellow Fever as well as having another COVID-19 PCR test in the arrival terminal at Kotoka International Airport.
The following are guidelines for travelers to enter/depart Ghana at Kotoka International Airport;
DEPARTING PASSENGERS
- Are required to adhere to COVID-19 testing requirements for their destination countries
- Are required to always wear a face mask appropriately and adhere to social distancing as well as hygiene protocols
- Will undergo temperature screening at the entrance of the departure terminal.
- Only passengers and persons with business in the terminal will be allowed entry
- Online check-in and the use of self-service kiosks are strongly encouraged to reduce physical contact at the airport
- Passengers are advised to arrive at the airport at least 4 hours before the scheduled departure time.
- Traveling with pets will not be allowed
- Passengers are advised to regularly use the hand sanitizing stations provided in the terminal
ARRIVING PASSENGERS
All international arrivals including those from ECOWAS countries will be required to meet the following health requirements prior to admission by the Ghana Immigration Service.
- Passengers must not have symptoms suggestive of COVID19 including body temperature >38°C/ 100° F
- Passengers must possess a COVID-19 negative PCR test from an accredited laboratory in the country of origin
- The COVID-19 negative PCR test should have been done not more than 72 hours before the scheduled departure time from the country of origin
- For passengers who transit through other countries before arriving in Ghana, the first country of departure will be the reference point.
- Ghanaian residents who depart Ghana and return within one (1) week will not be required to present COVID-19 test results from the country of departure. They will, however, undergo mandatory COVID-19 testing upon arrival in Ghana
- Airline crew are exempt from the pre-departure and arrival testing and should follow airline policy for testing
- Airlines that board passengers without a PCR test result or a positive test result will be sanctioned
- Children under 5 years of age will not be required to undergo testing on arrival in Ghana.
- Persons who arrive under emergency circumstances such as diverted flights will not be required to undergo testing if they do not leave the airport or remain in transit such that they do not leave the hotel
- Passengers must wear face masks appropriately, extending from the middle of the nasal bridge to halfway between the chin and the neck
- General passengers will be subjected to a mandatory COVID-19 test at the arrival terminal at the cost of $150 to be borne by the passenger
- All persons testing positive will receive further clinical assessment and treatment
- All persons testing negative will be advised to continue to observe COVID-19 safety precautions following arrival in Ghana
