Take a tour of the island of Mozambique after breakfast. The little island of Ilha de Mozambique (also known as Mozambique Island) is connected to the Maputo mainland via a bridge that crosses the ocean. There are several relics from the island's heyday, when it served as a port of call for Portuguese expeditions and a stopover on the Indian Spice Route. The island, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to some of the most stunning colonial structures and medieval fortifications. The majority of people are Muslims, followed by a sizeable minority of Christians, and a relatively small number of Hindus. Near the southernmost point of the island, each faith tradition maintains a cemetery of its own.
As part of your island tour, you'll go to the Palace and Chapel of Sao Paolo, which is now a beautifully preserved museum with an impressive collection of artifacts from antiquity. Among the other attractions are the Sao Sebastiao Fort, the Harbor and Fish Market, and the Central Mosque.
The island offers much to keep you engaged for many days despite its small size.
