Burkina Faso, formerly known as the Republic of Upper Volta, received its current name on August 4, 1984, under President Thomas Sankara. The name reflects the nation’s identity: “Burkina” (from Mooré) means upright, symbolizing the people’s integrity and pride, while “Faso” (from Doula) means fatherland, literally “father’s house.” The suffix “-bé”, added to form “Burkinabé,” comes from Foulani and means “men and women.” Enjoy a tour orientation with your guide and overnight stay in Ouagadougou.
