Itinerary

DAY 1: ARRIVE DAKAR
DAY 1: ARRIVE DAKAR

Tour starts Monday, Thursday or Saturday.

A shuttle to your hotel will be waiting for you when you arrive at the airport. Begin your tour of Dakar and its surroundings in the early afternoon. Begin at the city's center, Independence Place, then go to the presidential residence, a prominent church, and the revelation mosque.

The journey will highlight the differences between certain upscale districts and other, more well-known but less rich neighborhoods. You will also visit key locations such as Kermel, which is known for its large selection of items, including food and crafts, as well as being housed in a stunning landmark architectural edifice. You might mention the Ifan Museum and other noteworthy attractions. The Monument de la Renaissance/Africa Renaissance Monument which is taller than the Statue of Liberty is a 164-foot-tall structure that was unveiled in 2010 and looks over Dakar.

The bronze monument, which was previously contentious, is now a well-liked tourist destination. It has a man, woman, and kid pointing as a representation of fresh African hope. Because conservative organizations successfully compelled the government to lengthen the woman's formerly short skirt to a more modest length at a cost of more than $10 million, she is now appropriately attired.

A noteworthy example of French colonial architecture is Dakar City Hall, which is seen as part of the city tour. Along with the clock tower, this is one of Dakar's most recognizable architectural features. Despite being the city's administrative center and city hall, it welcomes visitors like a museum.
Those sites not seen today will be visited tomorrow afternoon.

Day 2: GOREE ISLAND

Travel by boat for 20 minutes to the picturesque but notorious Goree Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Examine the generally peaceful lanes lined with largely pastel-colored colonial houses. The House of Slaves, which reflects Goree's horrible past, is one of the most noteworthy landmarks in this area.
Keep an eye out for the "Door of No Return," through which millions of individuals have unintentionally passed. On Goree Island, the trip includes a visit to the ethnographic museum and a history lesson from the curator. When opposed to its raucous neighbor just a 20-minute boat journey away, the pace here is calm, almost restorative. When you return, finish the city trip you started in Dakar yesterday.

Before going on to Cayar, stop at Pink Lake, a fishing community on the Atlantic coast where donkey-drawn buggies are still used for transportation. Arrive in time to witness the fishermen's stunning return. They bring a lot of fish and other treats with them as they sail in their brightly painted dugout pirogues. There are shoppers, families, and children all over the place.

The only place available for activists to congregate was Regina Mundi Church. When protesters stormed the chapel to protest the apartheid government's requirement that youngsters learn Afrikaans, it was there. Many of them were injured when the cops opened fire on them as they closed in. They also used tear gas, which caused damage to the marble altar and Christ figure; bullet holes can still be seen in.

The world's largest hospital, Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, is named after the African National Congress leader who was assassinated in 1993.
Mandela's House is comprised of four interconnected rooms that are filled with memorabilia, artwork, and images of the Mandela family. Nelson Mandela has been awarded honorary doctorates by a number of foreign colleges and organizations.
