Saint Louis, 2 Days

Day 1: Dakar – Thies – St Louis

In the morning we depart to Saint Louis. On the way we stop at Thies.

Thiès, officially Senegal’s second-largest city, although it feels quite small and is much quieter than the ever bustling Dakar. Thies is known for its Tapestry-making industry. You will visit the Artisanal Village- a compound of thatched huts that is home to local artists displaying wares including clothing, textiles, drums, jewelry, sculptures, and paintings.

Continue to St. Louis. After hotel check in visit Senegal’s colonial capital which still has the title of Senegal’s cultural center and is home to the annual Saint Louis International Jazz Festival.

This see the city in a horse drawn carriage as you explore the narrow streets flanked by houses with carved wooden balconies and verandas while learning the history Senegal’s northernmost city.  Stop by the vibrant fishing village of Guet Ndar before arriving back at your hotel.

Meal(s) Included: DinnerOvernight at Hotel Mermoz or Similar

Day 2: St Louis – Djoudj or Langue de Barbarie – Dakar

This morning you will visit the Djoudj National Bird Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site), which is one of the most important bird sanctuaries in the world. Situated on a major palearctic migratory route, this park is a paradise for bird enthusiasts. Some of the world’s greatest concentrations of white pelicans and flamingos can be seen here: up to 10,000 species. Enjoy a pirogue ride to better view the many species of cormorants, pelicans, ducks, flamingos, various songbirds and more. You may also see crocodiles, boas, boars and other wildlife.

Djoudj is closed June to October when we replace Djoudj with a cruise on “Langue de Barbarie” where you can watch river birds among others.

Langue de Barbarie, a narrow peninsula which separates the Atlantic ocean and the Senegal river is rich in a wide variety of bird species and several species of turtle including the endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtle.

This afternoon we return to Dakar with stops at points of interest time permitting.
