After breakfast, take a city tour of Addis Abeba, starting with the picturesque Mount Entoto. Addis Ababa is the world's third-highest capital, at 2500 meters, while Entoto is several hundred meters higher. You will visit the Mariam and Archangel Raguel churches within Entoto's former Imperial Compound. After that, visit the National Archaeological Museum, which houses the 3.5 million-year-old bones of 'Lucy.' Dinner at the Crown Hotel; interesting presentations of traditional music and dance from Ethiopia's several regions.

Transfer to the airport for a morning flight to Bahir Dar, a lovely town on the shores of Lake Tana, Ethiopia's largest lake, which is ringed by islands including churches and monasteries. After lunch, take a boat journey to the Zeghe Peninsula, which is noted for its 14th century circular, grass-roofed churches with stunning wall paintings, and see The Betra Mariam and Ura Kidane Mehret Churches. In the evening, meander through Bahir Dar, which is known for its marketplaces and restaurants featuring traditional and contemporary Ethiopian music.

Drive to Gondar, the historic Imperial Capital, after breakfast, to explore the Imperial Compound, which contains the majestic 'Fasalidas' fortresses that are still in good condition. There is also the bath of King Fasilides. Except for the Debre Berhan Selassie Church, all of Gondar's churches were destroyed during the Mahdist Dervishes' 1800s assault. According to legend, as the troops approached the church, a swarm of bees encircled the property and kept them at bay, while the Archangel Michael himself appeared before the big wooden gates wielding a flaming sword. The day closes with a visit to the destroyed palace of Queen Mentowab and the Qusquam church. In the evening, visit The Mini Fogera to enjoy Asmari music and traditional cuisine.

Take a flight to Lalibela. King Lalibela of the Zaghwe dynasty erected a series of rock-hewn cathedrals, which are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, towards the end of the 12th and beginning of the 13th century. The churches are divided into two sections on either side of a brook called locally as "The River Jordan." Visit the 11 rock-strewn churches of Lalibela, the most remarkable of which is the Bet Giorgis. It is accessible by a tunnel in the rock and sculpted in the shape of a Greek cross. These rock-cut cathedrals constitute one of the world's great wonders. The churches, built into the steep slope, can be seen from the air.

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Axum, the former capital of an empire that spanned the Red Sea to Arabia, traded with India and China, had its own alphabet, had massive architectural works, and was one of the four great powers of the ancient world in the fourth century. It is possible to visit the incredible stelae or obelisks, which are the largest single pieces of stone standing anywhere on the earth. It is still unknown how they were transported and constructed from the quarry. There are also tombs and castles of previous kings, the Axum Museum, and the Mariamtsion Church, which was built on the site of Ethiopia's first church.Ethiopian Orthodox Christians believe that a chapel within the church site houses the Ark of the Covenant, or the actual tablets of Moses. The journey begins with a visit to the museum and stelae. Then you climb a hill to visit King Kalab's fortress, passing Mai Shum (the Queen of Sheba's bath) along the way. Returning to town, you will see King Basen's tomb, the small museum inside the church grounds (the priests may likely put on display crowns of past kings for visitors to see), and end the day with a visit to the site known locally as Queen Sheba's Palace, though it is actually of a later date, the villa of the villa of an Axumite notable from around the 1st century AD. The Yeha Hotel, is set on a hill overlooking the stelae field and the Mariamtsion Church.

Day 9 Axum

After breakfast, go to Yeha, Ethiopia's earliest city, where people have lived for over 2800 years. Visit the ruins of the temple devoted to the moon deity Ilmuqeh. The church of Abune Aftse, one of the "Nine Saints" who helped spread Christianity in Ethiopia, is located next to the temple. On the way back, around 5 kilometers out of Axum, the light should be great for shots of the "tooth of Adwa," with its stunning mountain backdrop.
