Day 1: Dakar, Senegal

On arrival in Dakar you will be met at the airport, assisted and transferred to your hotel.

Day 2: Dakar

After breakfast begin the city tour of Metropolitan Dakar. Visit the colourful markets including Tilen Market, famous for a variety of medicinal herbs and traditional healers. Visit the picturesque residential district of Medina.

Day 3: Goree Island

After breakfast, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Goree Island. Tour includes a visit to the ethnographic museum and a lecture by the curator on the history of Goree Island.

Day 4: Dakar / Pink Lake / St. Louis

After breakfast. Depart to Saint Louis located in the north of Senegal. En route take a tour of Pink Lake, a rare natural phenomenon caused by a unique combination of microorganisms and high concentration of salts which gives the lake its pink colour. Interact with the women harvesting salt; visit the Fulani village where you will be welcomed by the Chief and his wives. Continue to St. Louis, Senegal’s former French Colonial Capital. In the afternoon, city tour of Saint Louis including a visit to the fishing village of Guet Ndar.

Day 5: St. Louis / Djoudj / Dakar

Complete tour of St. Louis. Explore the narrow streets flanked by houses with carved wooden balconies and verandas. Visit the National Bird Sanctuary which has a vast array of birds including cormorants, pelicans, ducks, flamingos, various songbirds among others. Return to Dakar for overnight.

Day 6: Dakar / Bamako

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for the flight to Bamako; you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Time permitting start the tour of Bamako: including the National Museum, the recycling market and the handcraft centre.

Day 7: Bamako / Mopti

After breakfast, morning drive to the Venice of Mali, Mopti. Short stop on the way to admire Ségou city with its Sudanese style architecture. Learn how to make the Bogolan (traditional clothes) and keep your sample for souvenir. Continue to Mopti, stopping along the way to see examples of small village life. Arrive late afternoon in Mopti. Time permitting; go on a sunset sail on the Niger River in a motorised boat, a great picture taking opportunity.

Day 8: Mopti / Dogon Country

After breakfast, travel to Sangha and start the tour of Dogon Country. With its fascinating rocky, Sahelian landscape, the Dogon Country is considered to be one of the most extraordinary places on earth. The Dogons live in the central plateau region of the country, south of the Niger bend near the city of Bandiagara in the Mopti region. The Dogons are best known for their mythology, their mask dances, wooden sculpture and unique architecture. The principal Dogon area is bisected by the Bandiagara Escarpment, a sandstone cliff of up to 500m (1,640 ft) high, stretching for about 150 km. Dogon life is centred on sacred rights and rituals which take place in the hollow cliffs of the escarpment on which the Dogon houses are built. Dogon culture is surrounded in mysticism and intrigue, from an astonishing knowledge of the solar system to the unique structure of Dogon villages. Visit a Dogon seer. On the way you will visit Songho known for its Rock paintings and grotto. Learn the ritual of initiation that opens the door to adulthood. From the top of the cliff enjoy a wonderful view over the vast Dogon village. Continue to Bandiagara and stay for overnight.

Day 9: Dogon – Mopti

After breakfast, descend the Bandiagara escarpment and visit the village of Banani to see ancient Tellem cave dwellings in the cliff face with mask carvings. Continue to the villages of Ireli and Amani, site of a sanctuary for crocodiles which are sacred to the Dogon people. Ascend and visit the village on the edge of the Bandiagara Cliff. Return to Mopti this evening.

Day 10: Mopti – Djenne – Segou

After breakfast travel from Mopti to Mali’s architectural jewel, Djenné. Founded in the fourth century, Djenné has scarcely changed since the Middle Ages. The atmosphere in the streets transports you back to Medieval times. Visit Djenné city, the mosque considered the world greatest mud brick structure, was built in 1906-07. This evening continue to Ségou for dinner and overnight.

Day 11: Segou – Bamako-Depart

After breakfast, on your way to Bamako, stop in Sékoro (the old Ségou) capital of the Bambara Kingdom where the founder and first king Biton Coulibaly is interred. Visit the village and its mysterious mosque, (no one knows who built it or when). Continue to Bamako, complete the city tour before being transferred to the airport for your onward flight.
