Kassena people, who are part of the larger Gurunsi ethnic group and inhabit northern Ghana and southern Burkina Faso, typically live in buildings with distinctive architectural features and wall paintings. Although wall painting and decorating are old practices, they are sadly fading gradually today

In fact, only a few of the surviving families in the town still have recently renovated homes, largely, as I anticipated, for tourist reasons.

Just to the west lies Borgo International Airport. The enormous clay mosque in Bobo Dioulasso, an Islamic center, is strikingly adorned with wooden pikes. It is home to government research centers for geology and mines, cotton and textiles, and it has a college, the West African Centre for Economic and Social Studies.
