Cultural Tour of Ghana & South Africa, 12 Days

Day 1: ACCRA

On arrival in Accra you will be met, assisted, and transferred to your hotel.

Overnight at Miklin Accra

 

Day 2: ACCRA

After breakfast, begin the city tour of Accra visiting the National Museum of History and Ethnography to observe exhibits that reflect the heritage of Ghana through-out history to the present.  Visit Independence Square, Accra’s open-air ceremonial grounds where all national celebrations are held. Continue to visit the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and museum, a tribute to Ghana’s first President. This park, formally called the Polo grounds, is where Dr. Kwame Nkrumah declared the independence of Ghana.

Visit the Arts and Crafts market where you could test you’re bargaining and trading skills against the vendors.

Day 3: ACCRA/KUMASI

After breakfast, travel to Kumasi. On arrival in Kumasi, you will visit the Manhyia Palace. Manhyia was the residence of Ashanti kings until 1974. It now serves as a museum, containing a range of items relating to the Ashanti Kingdom. Visit the nearby Okomfo Anokye Sword, an important symbol of Ashanti unity for 300 years.

This evening visit the village of Bonwire, where the famous Kente cloth is handmade on looms in a time-honored tradition passed down through generations. You will see the Kente weavers in process of creating Kente cloth in various styles.

Day 4:  KUMASI/CAPE COAST

After breakfast, we travel to Cape Coast; with a stop at Assin Manso, the burial site of two former slaves from the U. S. and Jamaica whose remains were re-interred in August 1998 during Ghana’s first Emancipation Day Celebration. You will see the “Slave River” where captured Africans were washed before being confined in the Slave Castles to await shipment to the Americas and the Caribbean. This evening go on a guided tour through the ancient town of Elmina. At the harbor you will see colorful fishing canoes getting ready to go to sea for another night’s task of fishing. This is a picture perfect opportunity for the photographers in the group.

Day 5: CAPE COAST

After breakfast, visit Elmina Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in 1482. This castle was the first European structure built in sub-Saharan Africa. In the afternoon Visit Cape Coast Castle and the Castle Museum for a guided tour. Cape Coast Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and home to the “Door of No Return”.

Day 6:  CAPE COAST/ACCRA/DEPART

After breakfast, visit Kakum National Park. Kakum is one of Ghana’s most famous parks. Take a brief walking tour on the forest floor.

You will see birds, butterflies, and perhaps catch a glimpse of the more than 40 species of mammals including monkeys and the reclusive forest elephant. This afternoon return to Accra; stop and visit the village of Abandze, the ancestral home of Louis Armstrong, the famous American jazz musician. Arrive in Accra and transfer to the airport for your onward flight.

Day 7: CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA

Arrive Johannesburg, make connecting flight to Cape Town; meet, assist and transfer to your hotel.

Day 8: TABLE MOUNTAIN, CAPE TOWN, ROBBEN ISLAND

After breakfast, go on a city tour of Cape Town, starting with a cable car ride to the top of Table Mountain. The state-of-the-art cable car rotates 360 degrees on its way to the top, offering a panoramic view of the City. At the summit enjoy a magnificent view of Cape Town.  After Table Mountain visit the City Centre, the Company Gardens, the Castle of Good Hope and the Milnerton Lighthouse.  In the afternoon take a ferry to Robben Island, former prison, now a museum and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Day 9: CAPE TOWN TOWNSHIPS

After breakfast, go on a tour of the Cape Townships.  Live South Africa’s history on this cultural tour to Bo-Kaap and Langa Townships in Cape Town. Stroll down the narrow cobblestone streets of Bo-Kaap and you will come across brightly colored houses and mosques. At the oldest township of Langa, meet with the locals and learn about their lives and culture Visit the communities of Gugulethu and Khayelitsha townships, where friendly residents will share the experiences of their ancestors and traditional customs that have endured for generations. In the afternoon visit the picturesque ‘Malay Quarter’, a living cultural museum and home to the oldest Mosque in the Southern Hemisphere. Discover the unique culture, lifestyle and personality of the Cape Muslim community and observe their contribution to South Africa’s development.

Overnight at Southern Sun Waterfront

 

Day 10: CAPETOWN / JOHANNESBURG

Early morning depart Cape Town for the short flight to Johannesburg.

Arrive in Johannesburg and begin the “Rise to Freedom” tour to get an intimate understanding of South Africa’s turbulent past. Visit important monuments of South Africa as you learn about the history which once tore this country apart. Tour Constitution Hill, the site of the Old Fort Prison Complex, commonly known as Number Four which was a prison but is now is now a museum.

In Soweto observe:

  • The Hector Petersen Memorial, the spot where 12 year-old Hector was shot during the Soweto uprisings.
  • Regina Mundi Church. The church was a meeting place for activists
  • Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital the largest hospital in the world
  • Mandela’s House comprising four inter-leading rooms, containing an assortment of memorabilia, paintings and photographs of the Mandela family as well as a collection of honorary doctorates bestowed on Nelson Mandela from universities and institutions around the world.
  • Freedom Square, the place where the Freedom Charter was adopted as the guiding document of the government.

Overnight at Rivonia Guesthouse

 

Day 11: PILANESBERG GAME  RESERVE DAY TRIP

Drive to Pilanesburg Game Reserve a 2 hour drive Northwest of Johannesburg. The Reserve boasts the “Big Five” and a host of other wildlife species.  Pilanesberg lies in the crater of an ancient volcano and has some unique scenery and geology. Return to Johannesburg.

Overnight at Rivonia Guesthouse

 

Day 12: JOHANNESBURG/ DEPART

Today, your guide and driver will assist you to decide on your excursions and activities. You may shop for great bargains. You will then be transferred to the airport for your onward flight.
