Backroads of Senegal, 13-days

 

Day 1: Dakar

On arrival in Dakar, you will be met, assisted and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure.

Overnight at Le Ndiambour

 

Day 2: Dakar / City Tour / Goree Island

After breakfast, tour Dakar. Pass the colourful markets of Sandaga, Tiline and Kermel. Observe the Great Mosque, Independence Square, the Presidential Palace, the IFAN Museum, where a fine collection of West African masks is housed, the Cathedral, and the shopping centers on Pompidou Avenue. Then visit the craft village of Soumbedioune.

In the afternoon, take a ferry boat to visit famous/infamous Goree Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Observe the “Door of No Return”. The tour includes a visit to the ethnographic museum and a lecture by the curator on the history of Goree Island.  Early evening, return to Dakar.

Day 3: Dakar / Pink Lake / Thies / St Louis

After breakfast, drive to Saint Louis. On the way visit Pink Lake, a rare natural phenomena caused by a unique combination of microorganism and high concentration of salts which gives the lake its unique pink colour. Interact with the women harvesting salt and visit the Fulani village where you will be welcomed by the chief and his wives. Continue to Thies and visit the National Gallery of Tapestry before you get to St Louis.

Overnight at Mermoz

 

Day 4: St Louis / Djoudj / St Louis

After breakfast, visit the Djoudj National Bird Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site), which is one of the most important bird sanctuaries in the world. Situated on a major palearctic migratory route, this park is a paradise for bird enthusiasts. Some of the world’s greatest concentrations of white pelicans and flamingos can be seen here: up to 10,000 species. Enjoy a pirogue ride to better view the many species of cormorants, pelicans, ducks, flamingos, various songbirds and more. You may also see crocodiles, boas, boars and other wildlife. Return to St Louis and enjoy a tour of the city, (the former colonial capital of Senegal) in a horse-drawn carriage.  Explore the narrow streets flanked by houses with carved wooden balconies and verandas. See the governor’s palace, a fortress built in the 18th century; see the only mosque in the world with a bell which dates back to the colonial period.

Overnight at Mermoz

 

Day 5: St Louis / Touba / Kaolack

After breakfast, drive to Kaolack. Enroute stop to visit small villages and the holy city of Touba, founded by Ahmadou Bamba, a revered Holyman who started the Pan Africanism struggles in Senegal. After lunch continue to Kaolack.

Overnight at Relais

 

Day 6: Kaolack / Tambacounda / Wassadou

After breakfast drive to the Niokolo Koba Park, passing through Tambacounda and visiting small villages on the way. Arrive in Wassadou late afternoon.

Overnight at Campement Wassadou

 

Day 7: Wassadou / Tomboronkoto / Kedougou

After breakfast, continue exploring rural Senegal. Visit places where gold is mined in the traditional manner. Trek to visit a few some Bedik villages and overnight in Kedougou.

Overnight at Hotel Bedik

 

Day 8: Kedougou / Bassari Country

After breakfast, drive to villages in the area of Kedougou and Salementa; visit the Bedik people. Visit their main villages such as Iwol to meet the Biwol and Etyowar people. Drive to see the cascade of Dindelo. Return to Kedougou for overnight.

Day 9: Kedougou / Kaolack

After breakfast, cross the Niokolo Koba Park before driving back to Kaolack, stop at points of interest for more sightseeing.

Overnight at Relais 

 

Day 10: Kaolack – Saly

After breakfast, drive to Joal Fadjouth and Mbour. Joal is the birthplace of Senegal’s first president, Leopold Sedar Senghor and its picturesque twin, Fadiouth a village covered with oyster and clam shells. The food supplies are housed in granaries built on stilts.  Continue to Saly Resort in time to visit the beach before the sun sets.

Overnight at Le Bougainvillees

 

Day 11: Saly –  Bandia Park – Saly

After an early breakfast drive to Bandia Park for a Safari. Chance to see wildlife such as Crocodiles, Antelopes, Rhinoceros, Monkey, Buffalos, Giraffe among others… Observe the legendary Baobab tree which has been used during the past century as cemetery. Inside the game reserve there is a bar restaurant where you may stop for refreshments.

Overnight at Le Bougainvillees

 

Day 12: Saly – Dakar

After breakfast, morning at leisure before the afternoon drive to Dakar; visit Touba Dialaw enroute.

Day 13: Dakar – Depart

Day at leisure, in the evening transfer to the airport for onward flight
