Day 1: Accra, Ghana

Once you arrive in Accra, you'll be warmly received after going through immigration and customs. You will be picked up by our cultural tour guide and transferred in a private A/C vehicle to your hotel in Accra. Check-in at your hotel, relax and prepare for the next day’s activities.

A whole new experience will be awaiting you as you wake up today. After breakfast at the hotel, we will a scenic drive around the economic and administrative districts of Accra, visiting the following places: 

 

The W.E.B. Du Bois Centre was established in recognition of the life of the prominent Pan-Africanists who chose to live and work in Ghana. The Centre is a place for Pan-African Thought and houses a conference room, as well as a memorial/museum documenting Du Bois' life and highlighting Ghana's role in Pan-Africanism. 
We'll continue to Independence Square, where you will see the flame of African Liberation that was lit by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1961. The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, with its attractive gardens and museum, is a great place to learn about the first President of Ghana. It also serves as the final resting place for the late president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah after his previous burial in Guinea and Nkroful, his birth town. 
Our day’s visit ends at Jamestown Community, the oldest city in Accra. It is the most historic neighborhood where history resides on every corner. Best known for its lighthouses (the first of which was constructed in 1875 by the British) as a navigational aid for trading vessels sailing through the Gulf of Guinea. The original structure was ruined but a larger and more improved lighthouse was completed in 1921. 
You may visit the “Brazil House” which is famous for the Afro-Brazilian history behind it. Built in 1836 and completed 100 years after 1638, this historic house serves as a museum to showcase historic memories indicative of the previous centuries of migration to Ghana by Africans from Brazil and Portugal.

Day 3: Accra - Cape Coast

In the morning we depart for Cape Coast. We embark on a tour of Cape Coast before being transferred to our hotel.  

Later in the afternoon, you visit Elmina castle where you will explore the grounds and rooms full of haunting history. The 14th-century fortress was built by the Portuguese in 1482. This UNESCO World Heritage site was originally known as St. George’s Castle.

After breakfast, you will visit Kakum National Park in Ghana. It has one of Africa’s famous rainforest canopy walkways. This canopy walkway will be one of the highlights of your time in Ghana. Prepare to take a deep breath while you walk the suspended bridge and marvel at the breathtaking views that stretch for miles across the rainforest. 

Continue the tour to Cape Coast Castle and its dungeon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you will be moved emotionally by the ‘’Door of No Return’’.

Day 5: Elmina - Kumasi

Following a good breakfast, we check out of the hotel and depart to Kumasi, the capital city of the Ashanti Kingdom.  

On arrival in Kumasi, visit the Manhyia Palace now a museum, which contains treasures relating to the Ashanti Kingdom.  The Ashanti form the biggest population group in Ghana. For centuries they were the rulers in this region because of their military supremacy. At Manhyia Palace, disputes are still settled in accordance with centuries-old customs where the King has the final word 

We continue to the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum where we gain an insight into the history and culture of the Ashanti Kingdom where you will see a replica of the famed Golden Stool, which is believed to have descended from the sky and is the spiritual symbol of the Ashanti People. You'll also take a walk-through display on local folklore and pick up some information on local crafts.

Day 6: Kumasi and Vicinity

After breakfast, you will further explore some of the significant cultural villages of this ancient Kingdom on visits to some of their craft villages as follows 

The village of Ahwiaa has long been known for its many talented craftsmen who fashion Royal Stools, walking sticks, and fertility Dolls from wood. This thriving community is also known for producing some of the most talented artisans who create hand-carved jewelry boxes and other wood-carving items of all kinds. 
At the village of Ntonso, you can learn about the cultural significance of Adinkra cloth and watch as textiles are created from Adinkra symbols using Black Dye obtain from the bark of a special tree which only grows in the North. You can either draw your own Adinkra symbols or purchase pre-designed pieces of fabric. 
Adanwomase village, where you will witness how the local weavers work on their looms in the town center and demonstrate how the famous Kente cloth is made in a time-honored tradition passed down through generations. You may decide to purchase some of the stunning Kente fabrics on display at the center.

Time permitting, you continue to the Shai Hills Game Reserve. This stunning Game Reserve is home to a beautiful range of rocky hills sitting in the midst of large, wooded grassland, 31 species of mammals, 175 species of birds, and 13 species of reptiles. 

Here, you will also find a fascinating history of the Shai people and how several cave systems in the hills have played an important role in their culture and tradition.

Breathe in the fresh morning air as we pass through the lush greenery of the Volta Region. After breakfast, visit Wli Waterfalls, which is the largest and highest waterfall in Ghana. It's divided into two sections with ice-cold water flowing from about 80ft.  En route to the waterfall, you will take a hike through the Agumatsa Forest, where you will cross the same river eleven times before reaching the breathtaking falls. There will be a chance for you to take an early morning dip in the waterfalls and natural ponds 

In the afternoon, visit Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary one of Africa’s best-kept secrets set in a beautiful tropical rainforest. The rare Tafi monkeys are endemic to Ghana and listed as endangered. Here at Tafi, they are protected by law and are therefore not hunted. You may also take a hike through a selection of well-marked hiking trails taking you within meters of fascinating primate behavior.

This morning after breakfast, we set off to Lome, Togo's capital, thought to be the country's most cosmopolitan city. Tourists are drawn by its delightful climate, relaxed pace of life, and pleasant atmosphere. 

After immigration formalities at the Aflao-Lome border, enjoy a panoramic sightseeing tour of the city's main features such as the Independence Square, National Museum, Craftsmen village, Central market where traditional articles can be found, the Fishing Harbor, fetish market where sacred magic products are sold and Grand Marche where pearls are sold.

Today you’ll visit the slave house in Agbodrafo. From there you can easily travel by shared boat to Togoville, a red-earth village that was the homeland of numerous slaves taken to Haiti, who were members of the voodoo cult. Here you will find magic remedies and voodoo charms used to cast powerful spells. You are invited to sample some potent herbal teas prepared by a village herbalist today as well!

Day 11: Lome / Ouidah / Cotonou, Benin

Travel along the coast to Ouidah, the former slave trading post, and the birthplace of Voodoo. This memorable visit takes you to the Voodoo Museum, the Sacred Forest (Kpasse Forest), and the Temple of the Pythons.  You then continue to the place of a common grave, the tree of forgetfulness, and “Gate of No Return”.   

Enjoy lunch in this historic town before transfer to Cotonou for the night.

Day 12: COTONOU - GANVIE - COTONOU

Depart at a leisure pace to the village of Ganvie, popularly known as “The Venice of Africa”. It is built with houses on stilts above the waters of Lake Nokoue. Here, you can explore the narrow streets idling with activity and watch the daily life of the people as they go about their work. You will find all kinds of artisans here: potters, sculptors, or blacksmiths. There are also handicraft sellers who enjoy telling their tales to visitors.

Today, you will return to Ghana via Lome. On arrival in Accra, you will decide on your excursions and activities with the assistance of the guide.
