Itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVE ACCRA
Day 1: ARRIVE ACCRA

Once you arrive in Accra, you'll be warmly received after going through immigration and customs. You will be picked up by our cultural tour guide and transferred in a private A/C vehicle to your hotel in Accra. Check-in at your hotel, relax and prepare for the next day’s activities. You will have a brief orientation with your guide on what to expect during your stay in Ghana.  

This evening there will be a welcome dinner and orientation including a lecture/discussion on Ghanaian history, culture, and customs. You will also learn about staying safe and healthy in Ghana and tips for traveling across Africa.

Day 2:  ACCRA

A whole new experience will be awaiting you as you wake up today. After breakfast at the hotel, we will a scenic drive around the economic and administrative districts of Accra, visiting the following places: 

The W.E.B. Du Bois Centre was established in recognition of the life of the prominent Pan-Africanists who chose to live and work in Ghana. The Centre is a place for Pan-African Thought and houses a conference room, as well as a memorial/museum documenting Du Bois' life and highlighting Ghana's role in Pan-Africanism. 
We'll continue to Independence Square, where you will see the flame of African Liberation that was lit by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1961. The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, with its attractive gardens and museum, is a great place to learn about the first President of Ghana. It also serves as the final resting place for the late president, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah after his previous burial in Guinea and Nkroful, his birth town. 
Our day’s visit ends at Jamestown Community, the oldest city in Accra. It is the most historic neighborhood where history resides on every corner. Best known for its lighthouses (the first of which was constructed in 1875 by the British) as a navigational aid for trading vessels sailing through the Gulf of Guinea. The original structure was ruined but a larger and more improved lighthouse was completed in 1921. 
You may visit the “Brazil House” which is famous for the Afro-Brazilian history behind it. Built-in 1836 and completed 100 years after 1638, this historic house serves as a museum to showcase historic memories indicative of the previous centuries of migration to Ghana by Africans from Brazil and Portugal

Following breakfast, we depart to Cape Coast, the main capital city of Ghana’s Central Region. En route, we will stop to take a brief tour of Mankessim, noted for its busy markets and Posuban Shrines. Here, you will have the opportunity of seeing some of the shrines as well as the Fante villages.  

Upon arrival in Elmina, we will embark on a guided tour of this ancient township where you can catch a glimpse of the colorful canoes at the harbor getting ready to go to see for another night’s task of fishing. This is a perfect opportunity to capture some great photos for future keeps.

Day 4: CAPE COAST

This morning, we drive a short distance to the Cape Coast Castle perched on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The Castle is home to the West African Historical Museum established by the Smithsonian Institute in collaboration with the Ghanaian Government. The Castle was once the hub of human trading in West Africa that served as an important link in the transatlantic slave trade but now restored as an important UNESCO World Heritage site.  

We continue on a visit to the Elmina Castle where you will explore the grounds and rooms full of haunting history. The 14th-century fortress which is currently a UNESCO World Heritage site and originally known as the St. George’s Castle was built by the Portuguese in 1482.   

Late afternoon, you will experience a ceremony that you probably haven't heard about before. It is called the Fihankra Ceremony - ‘’Restore to Diaspora the Cultural and Spiritual connections that were denied them for centuries’’. This ceremony will include a traditional Naming Ceremony where you will receive a certificate of authentication

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, before we depart to Assin Manso where we will find the burial site of two former slaves from the U.S. and Jamaica whose remains were re-interred in August 1998 during Ghana’s first Emancipation Day celebration. You can see the ‘slave river’ where enslaved Africans were washed before being confined in the castles to await shipment to the Americas and the Caribbean.  

Upon our return to Cape Coast, we will explore the Kotokoraba market; a unique market that blends together African features and European touches. The Kotokoraba market has existed for many decades and was a major trading site during the pre-independence era. It was also the economic hub of the region, with major trading stores located all around it. There is something for everyone here: clothing, shoes as well as foodstuffs such as palm oil, bananas, various fruits, etc.

Depart to Accra. Stop at Abandze, the ancestral home of Louis Armstrong, America's famous Jazz Musician.  

Arrive in Accra in time for your onward flight to South Africa

Upon arrival in Johannesburg, you will be received and transferred to your hotel.  

After freshening up, we drive to Lesedi Cultural Village. This village is located among rocky hills and is home to the customs, traditions of four of South Africa’s tribes are brought to life. Get a presentation and guided tour of homesteads from the four different ethnic groups- Zulu, Xhosa, Basotho, and Pedi. The tour is followed by a cultural performance by the four groups- Zulu, Xhosa, Basotho, and Pedi. The tribal dance display is then followed by a Pan African Feast served in the Nyama Choma restaurant with delicacies from different regions of Southern Africa.

After a good breakfast, the ideal Safari destination is the Pilanesberg Game Reserve, a 4500 square kilometer reserve where about 400 animal species live. The reserve has a large number of game species, including the Big Five. The Pilanesberg lies in the crater of an ancient volcano and has some unique scenery and geology. The establishment of this reserve saw the biggest relocation project ever of wild animals and the reserve now boasts the Big Five’ lunch at a local restaurant.

Today promises to be a thrilling experience as you gain a deeper understanding of South Africa’s history. Travel along the paths of the freedom fighters and experience the City of Johannesburg and Soweto through their eyes as we visit the following places:

The Hector Petersen Memorial, the spot where 12-year-old Hector was shot during the Soweto uprisings. Here you will find rooms containing photographs, mementos of Hector, audio records, and newspaper articles that tell the story of the Petersen family and Soweto, as well as provide a historical glimpse into apartheid, South Africa.

Regina Mundi Church, which served as a meeting place for activists with nowhere else to meet. It was instrumental in Soweto's most significant. Police shot and injured many; firing teargas and damaging the marble altar and the figure of Christ, the bullet holes are still visible in the ceiling.

The Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital is the biggest hospital in the world, named after Chris Hani, a leader who was assassinated in 1993.

Nelson Mandela's home contains four interlinking rooms, filled with memorabilia and photographs from Nelson Mandela's life as well.

Freedom Square was where the Freedom Charter was adopted.

You will be transferred to the airport for an afternoon flight to Cape Town. You will be met by your tour guide. Take the ferry to Robben Island a former prison now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Spend the evening in Cape Town.  

This evening enjoys dinner at the Cape Town waterfront.

A stunning view is one of the highlights of a cable car ride to Table Mountain. The- state -of -the -art car rotates 360 degrees on its way to the top, offering a panoramic view of the city. At the top of Table Mountain, take short strolls to enjoy the spectacular view.  

Continue to downtown Cape Town, the Company Gardens, the Castle of ghood hope, Milnerton Lighthouse for a view of the Table Mountain. 

In the afternoon, embark on a cultural tour of Cape Town's oldest townships. Visit Langa to gain insights into the legacy of apartheid and the country’s struggle for democracy. In Gugulethu township, visit a community-driven project and observe the local craftsmen at work. 

In Khayelitsha, you will find a large informal settlement in Cape Town. 

This evening, there will be a special dinner accompanied by music and poetry. You will be invited to display your artistic and musical skills if you have any.
