Overview

Mande is the original name of Mali. The Kingdom of Mande has been annexed by the sorcerer King Soumangourou KANTE, the strongest King at that time. Malinké people fed up with him, called the prince Sundiata KEITA to liberate Mande from Soumangourou’s domination. When Sundiata came from exile, he rested in Siby while planning to rid the people of the sorcerer king. In 1236 he won the war and decided to detain Soumangourou, he followed him to Koulikoro where Soumangourou entered a cave in Nianan Koulou and never came out. Sundiata organized a delegation in Kurukan Fugan which included all the 12 kings of Mande. During the Assembly, he declared “Our Kingdom is now big enough to become an Empire and is the biggest and strongest in West Africa.

The biggest and strongest animal in water and on earth being hippopotamus, let’s name our Empire Mali, (hippo in Malinké dialect” The country took the name Mali in 1236. He also thought of organizing the society: Nobles, Griots, and slaves. Together they created a constitution of 44 Laws defining the roles and places of each person. All the 12 kings agreed that Sundiata be the Emperor of the Mali Empire
