When you arrive in Kumasi, head visit Manhyia Palace, which served as the official residence of the Ashanti Kings (Asantehene) until 1974 and is now a museum showcasing precious artifacts of the Ashanti Kingdom. Visit the neighboring Okomfo Anokye Sword, which marks the spot where the Golden Stool "descended from the skies" and is an important Ashanti symbol of unification. It has been there for 300 years. Learn how the Black Dye is manufactured in the village from tree bark and make your own Adinkra sash to take home. Our final settlement will be Adanwomase, where the Famous Kente Cloth is created on looms in a time-honored technique passed down through generations. You will stop at Assin Manso on your way to the Central Region of Ghana today. This is where two former slaves from the United States and Jamaica were re-interred. Take a trip to the "Slave River," where captured Africans were cleaned before being housed in slave castles until they were sent to the Americas and Caribbean. When you get to Cape Coast, take a tour of the museum and castle there. Africans were taken to the Americas as slaves from Cape Coast Castle, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The famous "Door of No Return" is located in the Castle. Take a tour of the historic village of Elmina this evening. Visit Kakum National Park after breakfast. One of Ghana's most well-known parks is Kakum. Take a quick walk through the forest, where you can observe birds, butterflies, and perhaps even over 40 different species of mammals, such as monkeys and the rare forest elephant. Head over to the canopy walk now. Africa's only aerial walkway across the forest canopy, a 1000-foot path with seven bridges and viewing platforms that rise more than 150 feet above the earth, is located in Kakum. The famed American jazz musician Louis Armstrong's family house is in the town of Abandze, which you might visit on your way back to Accra in the afternoon.
