How To Use Facebook To Find Your Next Holiday

Everyone loves to travel; we all do. Travelling helps us to escape from our busy life style for a moment and refresh ourselves. To travel, we must though find destinations. The destinations must be worth visiting and have plenty to offer for a tourist. Destinations should have some kind of a cultural, environmental or social values attached to them.

The usual procedure of finding a destination in 2012 is searching online. Typically though the search results we find aren’t customized to our personalities (Though search engines like Google work constantly to tailor search results to users’ preferences.). We can’t entirely blame search engines for this – there must be something we are doing wrong.

There is no denying that Facebook is the largest and most popular social network in use today. Love it or hate it, most of us are users of the service. We have added our real life friends as well as online friends to our friends list in Facebook. That makes Facebook the best place to ask for travelling tips in the digital age.

So let’s see how we can make use of Facebook to find our next destination:

Use the Facebook’s Question feature to ask friends for recommendations.

When you go to the home page of Facebook, you can see the text “Ask Question” just above the text box for updating your Facebook status. Go ahead and ask friends “I have a vacation for a week next month. Where can I get a great deal on accommodation, oh and I also need a great deal on car rental”.

If you have a good set of friends in you Facebook friends list, you’re likely to get some good answers to this question. The beauty of the Facebook Question feature is that it lets people vote for other people’s answers. They can vote for one or many. This way, you won’t end up with several people giving you exactly the same answer. Instead, you can see which options most of your friends have voted.

The other good thing aspect about this is you also get a dedicated comments thread for the question you have asked. That is a good option to tell your friends what you feel about their suggestions and provide them with more information, for an example, your budget. This comment thread will ignite conversation among your friends and you’ll end up having a detail-rich post of travel suggestions.

Upload an image with pictures of destinations you have in mind.

Using a basic image editor, you can create one image with all your possible destinations. Then you can upload it to your Facebook account.

Research has proven that images are likely to get user attention more than posts that don’t. Images always ignite memories and you are getting the benefit of what your friends recall. For an example, they’ll tell you about that one local restaurant which serves the best plate of the traditional food of that area. Or they might give you the contact number of that friendly taxi driver who is always really nice with tourists.

Try joining groups dedicated to travelers.

Facebook is full of groups dedicated to many subjects. Some groups focus on technology while others focus on art or many more topics. You’ll be able to find a number of groups discussing the subject of travelling. Feel free to join them and post your question in there. You’ll be surprised by the amount of reactions you get. Those groups are full of people who are enthusiastic about many travel destinations all around the world and they hold many insider details about these places. They are happy to help you with their knowledge as well as being up to date with travelling.

Find Facebook pages of places you have on mind.

Facebook has a feature called “Facebook Places”, which adds pages dedicated to real world places to the Facebook system and lets people check-in to these places and leave reviews about that place. Finding a place page is very easy, all you have to do is search the name of the place in the search box of Facebook and you’ll be presented with number of places matching that name.

Once you click on the name of the place you wanted, you’ll be taken to the page of that place. In there, you can see what other people have said about that place and how many Facebook users have checked-into that place. Additionally, if any of your friends have visited and checked-in that place earlier, you’ll be notified about that as well.  You can send a message to that friend and ask him for opinions directly as well.

Find your destination’s tourist’s authority’s Facebook page.

Many countries regulate their tourism through some kind of authority. Those organizations also work to increase tourists’ awareness about their country by maintaining social media profiles. Because Facebook is the most popular social network and a great way for them to reach potential tourists, they never miss the opportunity to keep their Facebook page live and up to date.

You’ll be able to find Tourist Authorities informing people about the best places to visit in their country and they’ll also say what the best reasons for you to visit them are. They will suggest hotels to stay, places to eat, see and walk, etc.

Find pages dedicated for providing travel information.

Many websites providing traveling tips maintain their own Facebook pages because of the ease of the process to connect with their audience. They usually share lot of useful details. Their community uploads pictures and reviews from their travels to Facebook pages like these. This kind of page often has many thousands of fans amongst them and they are all passionate about travelling. These pages are very informative for people looking for destinations to visit.

Facebook is a superb tool for finding your next holiday destination. Love it or loathe it (and most people love it!), you have to admit Facebook is good at what it does best and that is connecting people all across the world.
